Insurance Survey - Condition and Evaluation:    Often, a marine surveyor is hired to conduct a survey for the purpose of  insurance risk underwriting together with a market evaluation. Insurance companies wish to have on record a survey which has found the vessel in question in a safe and seaworthy condition at the time of inspection. This survey is completed on land where the hull and underwater equipment may also be thoroughly inspected. As with the hull, the deck is thoroughly moisture meter inspected. On board equipment will, as much as is practicable, be examined and tested while on shore. The mast, rigging and sails will be inspected if possible at the time of survey. Safety equipment will be noted in terms of type, legal requirements, quantity and any applicable recommendations noted. Note that Sails will be inventoried if they are available at the time of inspection but they will not be inspected in detail. Ideally this Sail inspection should be performed by a Sail Maker in a Sail-makers Loft where each sail can be spread out and thoroughly inspected for wear, tears and worn stitching. Following the survey, a formal report will be issued outlining the Vessels condition, listing defects and making recommendations. It will also contain pictures of the Vessel and a current market valuation based on the vessel's condition and it's equipment list.

Standard Marine Survey - Pre-purchase:    Survey is highly recommended prior to any boat purchase. Purchasing a Boat is a major investment just like buying a House and it should be inspected prior to purchase. Equipment on the boat will be inventoried and tested if power is available, standing and running rigging are inspected. Sails will be inventoried if they are available at the time of inspection but they will not be inspected in detail. Ideally this Sail inspection should be performed by a Sail Maker in a Sail-makers Loft where each sail can be spread out and thoroughly inspected for wear, tears and worn stitching. Electronics as well as mechanical equipment are tested, photographed and defects recorded. Following the survey, a formal report outlining condition, defects and recommendations, together with pictures and a market valuation based on condition is submitted to the client.

Sea Trial:    Sea Trials are normally performed separately and after the vessel has been Surveyed, launched and fully commissioned. The Current Owner must be present in order to operate the Vessel. Limit the crew to the Current Owner, Purchaser and Spouse, the Surveyor and a Marine Engine Mechanic if desired. Hatches are open and steps removed while under way and a Sea Trial can be a dangerous place for children or too many observers. Systems and Electronics are tested and the drive system(s) are observed underway.
